Coimbatore City Road Safety Patrol Valedictory Function
Venue: Codissia Hall D - Date: 27 February 2012 - Time: 10.00 AM to 3:00 PM

Road Safety Patrol (RSP) unit is a part of the Traffic Wardens Organisation and in Coimbatore this unit was restarted in the year 2008. This unit consists of students from schools and colleges, enrolled and trained by the Traffic Wardens on safe road practices. The RSP unit functions in such a way that they keep the school/college gates free of congestion. 15 minutes prior to the school / college timing in the morning and in the evening they clear the walking space (footpath) near the school of parked vehicles to allow smooth flow of students so that they will not walk on the road. Secondly they will not allow any vehicle to Stand, Park, Stop, Pickup / Drop children in front of the school gate and also help fellow students cross the roads safely.

This RSP unit in Coimbatore has been strengthened in such a way that this academic year, we are marching towards 100% coverage of RSP in city school. By fag end of this year Coimbatore will be the first city in India to have RSP units in all schools.

The RSP units are currently entrusted with the following responsibilities:

  • RSP students take 10 minute traffic rules classes in assembly or school audio system for the entire school once or twice every week. The rules subject is provided by the Traffic Wardens and to enable this activity, RSP teachers are educated on the rules and traffic logic. A book featuring all road safety aspects titled “My Personal Road Safety Guide” book is provided to all RSP students as reference material.

  • The Traffic Wardens provide technical help to schools who would like to develop a Traffic Park within the school premises.

  • RSP students are encouraged to write road safety messages in their school / college notice board.

  • RSP students are taken to the nearest automated signal junctions in the evening 4.00 to 5.00 PM to perform traffic duty under the Traffic Wardens supervision and in presence of the parents. This greatly helps RSP cadets in attaining direct knowledge on prevailing traffic conditions, to make them a good road user of the future.

In this context the program scheduled on the 27th of February 2012 is proposed to have the following activity.

1. An assembly of all the 12,000 RSP students of Coimbatore city.
2. Full day activity on Road Safety for all the RSP students.
3. Commissioner of Police to declare Coimbatore as the 100% RSP school city.
4. Best RSP School to be declared and “Commissioners RSP Rolling Trophy” to be awarded.
5. Best RSP College to be declared and “Commissioners RSP Rolling Trophy” to be awarded.
6. Best RSP Student of the city to be declared and awarded.
7. Best RSP Teacher of the city to be declared and awarded.

Traffic Wardens from atleast 10 other places from Tamilnadu other than Coimbatore will participate.

The activity will be day long with a opening session at 10 AM to 11 AM followed by outdoor activity. Afternoon session starts with indoor stage competitions followed by valediction and program shall conclude by 3:30 PM.

This will be one of a kind program involving more than 12000 disciplined RSP students and 100 traffic wardens who trained them.
